Wood Parquetry, Puzzle box

Parquetry originated in the late Edo period in Hatajuku city, located in the Hakone mountains. In the early days, there were more disarrayed or simple patterns in the wood inlays, but later in the Meiji period, the technique of wood parquetry moves to Shizuoka and was established as the actual way of making parquetry with repeating patterns and small wooden inlays. Hakone, unique in Japan as an area producing wood parquetry, became widely known for its elaborate use of craftsmanship. Even among their most famous works, the "Puzzle Box" as a mechanical trick box becomes famous worldwide. Our collection of these goods can be found on the 2nd floor.
